The study set out to explore the following broad objectives: to find out the causes of child labour in the restaurants and eateries of selected cities of Jharkhand; to examine the activities and working conditions of children in the restaurants and eateries; to assess the consequences resulting in children working in the restaurants and eateries and whether they conform to the features of worst forms of child labour.
The study used both qualitative and quantitative methods. Besides the interviews with a cross- section of restaurant owners/managers, children associated with the restaurants, the study also used the survey method to collect the data from the varied locations of cities where the restaurants and eateries are situated densely. The data collection methods which were commonly used included in-depth and extended interviews, focused group discussion and observations of around 100 restaurants and eateries of the selected study sites. Here, the purpose was only to gain an opinion or impersonal description; but to encourage an explicit interpersonal dialogue where the respondent share details of their experience and explore their own experiences. Statistical methods were also used in order to analyze the quantitative data. The limitation of this study was that the researcher had to depend on the experiences of the children themselves, the key informants, and other secondary sources of information.
